The project for 484 Prospect St received more support from the San Diego Historical Resources Board, which will recommend permit approval.

The San Diego Historical Resources Board approved a request to recommend a special use permit for 484 Prospect St, the La Jolla building slated to become the second Orli La Jolla.

The approval, unanimous on the HRB’s Jan 22 consent agenda, adds another to the list of groups that have supported the conversion of the existing 16,683 square-foot, single-family home on Prospect and Cuvier streets into the next Orli hotel.

The HRB approved the establishment of the 484 Prospect building as a heritage structure in September.

The plans are “consistent with the building’s and project site’s design and historical conservation elements,” the city of San Diego staff report states.

The Orli project is “a great example of adaptive reuse to bring a historic property current for not only the use of a homeowner, but for hundreds of people throughout each year to experience,” said HRB’s second vice chair Rammy Cortez.

Orli’s owners could have “just found some dirt and built a new hotel, probably for at a less cost of what it’s taking them to get through this,” Cortez added.

Calling the project unique, project architect Claude Anthony Marengo said the new Orli “will really shine in La Jolla.”

“The first Orli was a labor of love,” Orli co-owner Hailey Waitt said, adding she’s “been in love with [the second] property for 10 years. I couldn’t believe that we could even buy the property, let alone get this designation and be able to turn it into another Orli.”
