The new Cal Fire maps show fire hazards throughout La Jolla all the way to the coastline, with “high” and “moderate” levels marked as well.
In an updated fire hazard map, more of La Jolla is now classified by Cal Fire as a “very high” hazard area for fires.
The new map also shows more of La Jolla as “high” and “moderate” spreading all the way to the shoreline compared with 2011 maps where Soledad Natural Park and open space to the east were assessed as “very high.”
Cal Fire creates fire hazard severity zone maps to describe fire hazard potential over the long term for the entire state; the maps show potential fire behavior combined with the likelihood of fire to get an estimate of the hazard.
“Moderate, high, and very high fire hazard severity zones shall be based on fuel loading, slope, fire weather, and other relevant factors,” Cal Fire states.
Wildfires have been of great concern to La Jollans after recent brushfires in the community have led to questions about evacuation routes and more.
