The Stuart Collection piece was subjected to an unspecified act of vandalism and is assessing the damage after the July 4 incident.
“Fallen Star,” a recognizable piece within the UC San Diego’s Stuart Collection of public art, has been subjected to an act of vandalism; the suspect was quickly apprehended.
Fallen Star (2012), by Do Ho Suh, is a small house that appears to be perched precariously on an engineering building just northeast of Geisel Library on the UCSD campus.
UCSD police “responded swiftly to the incident,” arresting the suspect, identified as Gabe Lafond, at the Fallen Star site the evening of July 4, according to a statement from the university.
Lafond is not affiliated with UCSD.
Details of the vandalism are not yet available, UCSD said; the university is conducting a “thorough assessment of the damage sustained.”
Established in 1981, the Stuart Collection currently numbers 22 permanent pieces across campus by renowned global artists.
