Several of the bottom steps at the staircase leading to La Jolla’s South Casa Beach, just southwest of The Children’s Pool have broken off, likely during the large surf event Dec 31 and Jan 1.
Staff from the city of San Diego’s Parks & Recreation Department closed off the staircase with signage prohibiting use as of Jan 3, according to city spokesperson Benny Cartwright.
“Repairing the steps is beyond the capacity and capabilities of the Parks and Recreation Department,” Cartwright said, adding the department has requested the Transportation and/or Engineering & Capital Projects departments evaluate the staircase.
No timelines for assessment and repair are currently available.
