Police officer-involved shooting in Bird Rock

San Diego Police Department officials are investigating per protocol after an officer-involved shooting in Bird Rock July 6.

A San Diego police officer shot a man shortly after 7 a.m. July 6, after the Department responded to multiple calls regarding a man with a knife causing a disturbance in the street in the 5400 block of La Jolla Boulevard.

According to a statement by SDPD, “officers arrived on the scene and observed a Hispanic man in his 20s next to a vehicle stopped in the road. As officers approached, the subject walked toward them with a knife. The officers drew their service weapons and gave the subject verbal commands to drop the weapon. One officer fired his weapon, striking the man. Officers provided immediate medical aid, and paramedics transported the man to a local hospital, where he later died. No officers were injured in the incident.”

The officer involved in the shooting has been employed by SDPD for three years and is currently assigned to SDPD’s Northern Division, which includes La Jolla.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit was called to the scene to conduct the officer-involved shooting investigation, as required by county protocol.

“The motivation and circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation,” according to the statement. “Detectives are currently gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses and examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.”

When the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit completes its investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for their actions. SDPD will also conduct an administrative investigation into the officer’s firearm discharge.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit at (858) 285-6330 or (858) 565-5200 after hours. Anonymous calls can be made to San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
