Torrey Pines Road in La Jolla recorded 38 injury accidents from January through August, compared with 26 during the same time last year.
Accidents reported on Torrey Pines Road in 2026 have increased from 2025 numbers, and the San Diego Police Department is cautioning drivers to “focus on the road.”
From Jan 1 through Aug 31, 2026, San Diego police logged 38 accidents along the length of Torrey Pines Road from La Jolla Village Drive to Girard Avenue, compared with 26 accidents for the same time period and road in 2025.
The data is taken from SDPD reports where an injury has occurred, requiring a police report; those considered minor or noninjury are usually not reported and therefore not included in the numbers.
Most of those 38 accidents occurred in July (seven), with February the second-most (six). August had the fewest (three).
Week by week, Sunday and Tuesday have the highest numbers of accidents (eight and nine, respectively); Wednesday had the fewest accidents (one) recorded.
Three involved a bicycle.
The 38 collisions do not include the most recent serious incident on Sept 14, during which one person died and two more were injured following one car’s attempt at a U-turn.
The main causes for the 2026 accidents are a vehicle broadsiding another and rear-end collisions, according to San Diego police Lt John White.
These were preventable collisions, White said, and can be avoided when drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians “maintain continuous awareness of their surroundings and 100% focus on the road.”
The San Diego Police Department regularly conducts enforcement operations in La Jolla, White said, noting officers issued more than 1,300 traffic violation citations in La Jolla from January through August.
Encouraging people to obey posted speed limits, signs and pedestrian and traffic signals, White urged drivers to leave plenty of space in between vehicles.
“Patience and giving yourself a few extra minutes’ travel time might make all the difference,” he said.
