The crash occurred just after noon Feb 27, necessitating one person needing emergency extrication from one of five involved vehicles.
A multi-car collision Feb 27 at 2204 Torrey Pines Road near the intersection with La Jolla Shores Drive resulted in six patients being transported to local hospitals with injuries of varying severity, including one who needed to be extricated from one of the cars.
Traffic was still heavy as of 4:45 pm Feb 27, with the traffic light at Torrey Pines Road and La Jolla Shores blinking red as the weekend cars try to navigate the intersection and that of “The Throat,” leading out of La Jolla via Torrey Pines or La Jolla Parkway.
Shortly after 12:36 pm, San Diego Fire-Rescue crews and San Diego police officers responded to the collision, which involved five vehicles, including one that struck and knocked down a traffic signal, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesperson Candace Hadley.
Fire crews extricated one individual from a vehicle, she said; six patients (four adults and two children) were evaluated and transported to local hospitals.
Two patients sustained major trauma and four were transported with minor injuries.
The status of the patients is unknown at this time.
City of San Diego crews and SDG&E also responded to address the downed traffic signal and mitigate any potential electrical hazards.
The incident led to significant traffic delays in the area and surrounding side streets due to the necessary closure of westbound La Jolla Parkway and southbound Torrey Pines Road.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, said San Diego police Lt John White.
