From Bird Rock north to Wipeout Beach in The Village, the driver of a red minivan raised alarm with aggressive, dangerous behavior.
An incident of erratic, aggressive behavior that began March 17 in Bird Rock ended an hour or so later at Wipeout Beach with a man being restrained and transported away in an ambulance.
The 911 call came in about 10:30 am, reporting a man screaming and running around his red minivan near 5701 La Jolla Blvd.
At 10:38 am, a citizen sent lajolla.ca a video of police cars, assisted by a police helicopter, attempting a traffic stop in front of the La Jolla United Methodist Church in the Hermosa neighborhood.
The minivan slowed, but then raced off in the video, with police in close pursuit.
A few minutes later, the driver sped through The Village, turning around and heading south on Coast Boulevard, stopping and exiting the minivan at Wipeout Beach.
He then ran onto the rocks over Wipeout Beach, witness Barry Alman said. The minivan was not parked, however, and began to roll backwards, crashing into a parked car in front of the south end of retirement community Casa de Mañana.
Coast Boulevard was cordoned off to vehicles from Cuvier Street to just north of the crash.
When lajolla.ca arrived, dozens of people had gathered around Wipeout Beach as several emergency responders, including police, lifeguards on foot and jet ski and a member of the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT), approached the man, who was then perched on a large rock over the choppy waves.
The man proceeded to crouch on the rocks, intermittently flailing his arms and yelling.
The man fell off the rock onto the sand, where five police officers apprehended him, carrying him north via the stairs to a bench on Coast Boulevard, where he was handcuffed and yelling in response to police and PERT questions.
The man was restrained on a gurney and transported away in an ambulance as police searched the minivan.
At the time of publication, the man is in the hospital, according to San Diego police Lt. Bryan Brecht. He will be arrested for misdemeanor evading, hit and run and DUI (drugs).
