San Diego Police responded to a report of a large tree branch having fallen in La Jolla, causing injury.
A young girl sustained injuries to her head and possibly shoulder when a large branch from a tree on the patio at Il Giardino di Lilli cafe on Girard Avenue fell, taking several other branches with it.
The extent of the girl’s injuries is not known, although San Diego police officers evaluated her and administered ice packets while she and her family waited for an ambulance. The girl was conscious and mobile, though visibly upset.
It was not immediately clear whether the girl’s injuries were caused by a tree branch itself or a broken beam from Lilli’s patio fencing, which gave way under the large branches’ weight.
The incident occurred about 11:15 a.m. July 17; Lilli owner Giuseppe Scognamiglio called in an arborist and plans to keep the cafe closed for several hours until the arborist can remove much of the remaining tree branches.
It is not yet known why the tree branch fell; Scognamiglio has it trimmed and inspected, he said, on a schedule as advised.
