The Fay Avenue fire originated in the kitchen and has sent one senior to the hospital, temporarily displacing 20 others.
San Diego Fire-Rescue teams knocked down a fire reported just after 4:30 pm at 7630 Fay Ave, the site of senior memory care facility Revere La Jolla (formerly Monarch Cottages).
The fire resulted in a large response from SDFD, with several units responding and the fire being knocked down by 5:05 pm.
One senior was transported to a local hospital, according to SDFD Chief Jeff Mitchell, though details on his injuries and condition are not currently known.
The American Red Cross was called to assist 20 other residents displaced by the fire.
Originally called in as a “fish tank fire,” the fire actually originated in the kitchen of the two-story facility, with smoke visible from various points in The Village.
About two dozen passersby volunteered to comfort the evacuated seniors on the sidewalk, while staff at The Lot across the street brought over chairs for people, noted witness Bill Robbins.
