Jose Luis Santoyo, 42, fell 25 feet and died on scene.

A local hiker fell 25 feet from a trail just below the Torrey Pines Gliderport Sept. 3 and died at the scene.

He fell backwards from the trail about 3:30 p.m. and landed on his head, according to Perette Godwin, city spokesperson.

Witnesses reporting the fall called for help and began CPR, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The hiker has been identified as Jose Luis Santoyo, 42 and from San Diego, according to Chuck Westerheide, speaking for the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office.

Godwin confirmed the San Diego Police Department is investigating the fall; SDPD did not answer inquiries as to whether the death might be accidental.
