One man was rescued after driving his car through the fence on Coast Boulevard and landing underwater. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
A car remains submerged in La Jolla Cove after a man drove through the fence near 1200 Coast Blvd around 8:07 pm Tuesday, April 29.
San Diego lifeguards entered the water and extricated the man, administering CPR before transporting him to a nearby hospital. The man was described by witnesses as elderly and was underwater for about 10 minutes.
The man was confirmed dead April 30.
The crash over the cliffs into the water prompted a large emergency response, with lifeguards in the water, diving to search for other passengers, while helicopter searchlights and about 30 personnel assisted from the cliffs and rock above.
No other people were found in the car. Vehicle parts and debris were observed floating in the waves; the car’s bumper lay on the rocks above the water.
The car was still visible underwater from Point La Jolla April 30 as two tow trucks were spotted on Coast Boulevard.
Lifeguard dive crews and San Diego police personnel “are currently on scene working in coordination to remove the vehicle from the water,” Hadley said.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
A similar incident occurred in the same location in January 2023, when a driver mistook the gas pedal for the brake, crashed through the fence and landed on the rocks.
