Collision on North Torrey Pines Road sends cars into lagoon

The minor injury crash between a BMW and a Tesla on a busy Sunday led to northbound lanes of North Torrey Pines Road being closed for a while.

Two cars collided just after 4:30 pm Sunday April 20, with both vehicles winding up in a lagoon.

The minor injury crash occurred when a BMW departed the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve parking lot, according to San Diego police officer Colin Steinbroner.

The BMW attempted to proceed north near 12600 North Torrey Pines Rd and did not yield the right of way to oncoming traffic, Steinbroner said, which caused the driver of a Tesla to collide with the rear passenger side of the BMW.

Both the BMW and Tesla vehicles left the roadway and came to rest in the lagoon area of the reserve near the parking lot for Torrey Pines State Beach.

San Diego police kept the northbound lanes of North Torrey Pines Road closed while the accident was cleared.
