Car chase through parts of La Jolla ends in arrest

A white Maserati SUV stolen from San Diego Mission Bay Resort led police on a chase through much of coastal San Diego, including La Jolla.

Police responded to a radio call of a stolen vehicle from the Mission Bay Resort during late afternoon June 20, according to San Diego Police Department spokesperson Darius Jamsetjee.

As officers arrived, they observed the vehicle leaving and attempted to start a high-risk vehicle stop, Jamsetjee said. The driver fled with “wanton disregard” for safety through Mission Beach, Mission Bay, Pacific Beach and La Jolla.

The chase caught the attention of many on social media, with video emerging on Instagram and alarmed posts circulating on that platform and Nextdoor.

During the pursuit, a female exited the vehicle and ran on foot as the vehicle continued, Jamsetjee said; she was detained on Monmouth Drive in Pacific Beach near where she left the car.

The male driver continued on, through La Jolla Boulevard and stopped at Camino de la Costa, where he attempted to run from the vehicle but was taken into custody.

The vehicle was a rental car; a firearm was located in the vehicle, Jamsetjee said, and the driver was found to have an outstanding parole violation.

He was arrested for several felonies, including possession of a stolen vehicle, evading a peace officer with wanton disregard for safety and carrying a loaded firearm.
