14 rescued from ocean, cliff below La Jolla’s Goldfish Point

The group of swimmers and snorkelers were pushed into a dangerous area outside Sunny Jim’s Cave; one required paramedic help.

A group of 14 swimmers and snorkelers found themselves in need of aid, necessitating a large San Diego Fire-Rescue response July 10 near 1327 Coast Walk that had one seriously injured person requiring paramedic help.

San Diego lifeguards received the call for help just after 1pm, after the group of 14 were pushed into a “dangerous rocky area” just below Goldfish Point and The Cave Store, said San Diego lifeguard Lt John Maher.

Lifeguards initiated cliff and water rescue responses, Maher said, including watercraft and Rescue 44, a cliff rescue apparatus resembling a fire truck with a crane.

Lifeguards rescued the 13 uninjured swimmers after making contact via water and rappelling down the cliff to Emerald Cove (the waters just outside Sunny Jim’s Cave); the 13 were then transported to La Jolla Cove and La Jolla Shores.

One swimmer was found to be seriously injured, Maher said, and was hoisted up the cliff and transferred to paramedics. No further information on the patient’s status is available.

The rescue was wrapped up by 2:20 pm. It’s not clear whether the 14 were in one group or part of multiple groups of swimmers.
