One of the spaces recently constructed in La Jolla’s Scripps Park for approved sidewalk vendor activity will be moved slightly to the west, according to Vicky Joes, chief of staff for San Diego City Council President Pro Tem Joe LaCava.

The four-by-eight-foot space – a wood-bordered dugout in the park just west of the comfort station to be filled with concrete pavers – is one of a few in the park to delineate where free speech activities (such as speaking in public about political, ideological or religious topics; distributing brochures; and art creation and sales) can take place. 

After its construction, however, LaCava’s office was alerted that the particular box to be moved had inadvertently been placed within a view corridor, Joes said April 10 at the La Jolla Shores Association meeting. 

The view corridor, indicated in the city of San Diego’s general development plan for Scripps Park, cannot have anything blocking it.

As the Scripps Park vendor spaces are meant to be flexible, Joes said, “we are going to be able to shuffle that selected area … so that we can get it out of the view corridor.”

The space should be moved within a week so as to continue the momentum of enforcement of the new guidelines. 

“As we move along,” Joes said, “there may be more changes, there may be more things brought to our attention. And we want them to function to both give [vendors] access to their target audience as required and also to work for the community.”
