The emergent pipe bursts have led to water shut offs and street closures around The Village.
As of 3:30 p.m. Aug. 21, three different water pipe breaks under La Jolla streets have caused closures, curiosity and concern.
The first reported – and largest – is a rupture at the junction of Marine Street and Draper Avenue, a block south of where a fire hydrant was knocked over four hours earlier at Pearl Street and Draper.
It’s unknown yet if the two issues are related.
At Marine Street, parked cars were covered in mud as the water sprayed out from joints in the asphalt and concrete, which tented along the length of Marine Street west to Cuvier Street.
City of San Diego workers were on scene to warn pedestrians away from the area, eventually blocking access to Marine between Draper and Cuvier except for residents and shutting off the water.Â
City representatives could not estimate, and spokespeople did not immediately comment on how long the water would be shut off or the road closed.
Just a few blocks east, in front of 7855 Fay Ave., a similar buckling of the asphalt appeared as water began pouring across the road as city workers arrived to quell the problem.
And two blocks east, on Prospect Street at Herschel Avenue, city crews were on hand to close Prospect from Herschel to Ivanhoe Avenue, having just shut off the water when a similar pipe burst there.
