Full power is expected to be restored by 2 p.m.
Two power outages in La Jolla have lasted nearly an entire day and San Diego Gas & Electric crews are working to restore power.
Two circuits in the Windansea and Hermosa neighborhoods, affecting 395 and 168 customers respectively, are impacted, according to SDGE communications manager Alex Welling.
The initial outage occurred due to a broken crossarm on a pole, Welling said; the added weight of the equipment caused a crossarm on an adjacent pole to fail.
Instagram messages to lajolla.ca showed large numbers of SDGE crews and equipment working on poles and power lines throughout the morning while traffic lights blinked red and power remained out.
As to whether the broken crossarm and resultant outages are related to a transformer fire Oct. 7 on Rosemont Street that knocked power out in surrounding blocks, SDGE is “still investigating the exact cause,” Welling said.
The Oct. 7 transformer fire left traffic lights on Pearl completely out up to La Jolla Boulevard and other buildings in The Village without power for about two hours; the current outages have been ongoing since.
“There is/was no transformer on [the currently damaged] pole,” Welling said.
“Crews are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore power,” Welling said, noting that impacted customers have received phone, text and email updates.
The latest estimate is power will be turned on by 2 p.m. today.
