Most La Jolla schools start the next academic year Monday, Aug 11, with others to follow in coming weeks. Keep an eye out for shifting traffic patterns.
Though summer weather is hardly over, La Jolla schools are preparing for the 2025-2026 school year, with thousands of students back to school Monday, Aug 11.
Even if you don’t have students in your household, your traffic patterns will change as you head in and out of La Jolla. Be on the lookout for families walking to school and plan for extra time on the road in the mornings between 7:30 and 9 am and early afternoons.
The Village
San Diego Unified School District begins earlier than ever this year, with La Jolla High School on Nautilus Street and La Jolla Elementary on Girard Avenue beginning Monday, Aug 11 (the three other SDUSD campuses are in other neighborhoods).
The Bishop’s School on La Jolla Boulevard will begin Monday, Aug 18. The Gillispie School, directly across from LJES on Girard, will begin Tuesday, Aug 19 and Stella Maris Academy on Herschel Avenue begins Wednesday, Aug 20.
Mount Soledad and Muirlands
Muirlands Middle School on Nautilus, part of SDUSD, also starts Aug 11, meaning increased vehicular traffic as well as students on e-bikes and more.
Traffic will multiply in following weeks near the intersections of Nautilus, La Jolla Scenic Drive South and Soledad Mountain Road, as All Hallows Academy and The Evans School, which both begin Aug 20 and San Diego French American School, which begins Friday, Aug 29, are all within one block of each other.
Bird Rock
Bird Rock Elementary School (SDUSD) on La Jolla Hermosa Avenue starts Aug 11; please be mindful of the many families walking or driving their students to school.
La Jolla Shores and UTC area
The Preuss School, hosted on the UC San Diego campus, begins Wednesday, Aug 6 and Torrey Pines Elementary School (SDUSD) on Cliffridge Avenue starts Aug 11.
La Jolla Country Day School on Genesee Avenue begins Aug 20 and 21, further impacting traffic near UCSD and UTC, while The Children’s School on Torrey Pines Lane near Hidden Valley Road begins Wednesday, Sept 3.
And the fall quarter for UCSD begins Monday, Sept 22, which means undergraduates will be moving in on campus the weekend before.
