More Villa La Jolla at La Jolla Village Drive closures are ahead as emergency work to repair a storm drain passes the year mark.

Villa La Jolla Drive from La Jolla Village Drive to Holiday Court/Villa Norte will be closed overnight from Thursday, July 31 to Friday, Aug 1 for the installation of new traffic control.

Starting the morning of Aug 1, traffic patterns will shift from closing the middle lanes to closing the outer lanes, as vehicles will be directed through the center 24 hours a day.

This may limit access to adjoining properties, according to city of San Diego information.

Detour signs will be posted and drivers may use Via Norte to access the UC San Diego buildings at 8910, 8950 and 8980 Villa La Jolla Dr.

The work has been ongoing since July 2024, when the city began the “Villa La Jolla Drive Drainage System Emergency” project to replace a damaged section of aging storm drain under the street.

The storm drain collapsed, resulting in a sinkhole.

After the storm drain is repaired, the surrounding area, including the street, sidewalk, and other surface improvements, will be restored to its original condition.

Work is now expected to be completed in early September. The original estimate was May.
