The long-awaited work will take place at night to reduce traffic impacts but will last for several months as crews replace a guard rail east of Prospect Place.
Construction to replace a guard rail on westbound Torrey Pines Road between Coast Walk and Prospect Place will begin Tuesday, Oct 6.
Construction will take place at night from 7 pm to 3 am Sunday through Thursday to reduce traffic congestion on the busy thoroughfare; work will continue through March.
During the work, which will remove the current, temporary K-rail and install a permanent, ST-75 Bridge Rail made of galvanized steel, the northern westbound traffic lane and the bike lane on Torrey Pines Road will be closed during construction hours.
The area will be clear for vehicle traffic during the day, according to city of San Diego spokesperson Tyler Becker.
During the initial phase of work, the sidewalk will remain open; as work progresses, the sidewalk will be closed and pedestrians will be directed to the south side of Torrey Pines Road.
The traffic control plan also includes a proposed, partial and temporary protected pathway and pedestrian crossings on Torrey Pines Road, Prospect Place and at the existing crosswalk between Amalfi and Princess streets.
The construction start date may shift due to material procurement, Becker said; a door hanger will be provided to the community immediately surrounding the project area at least one week prior to construction.
The concrete K-rail was put in place after a car drove off Torrey Pines Road into a private yard on Coast Walk in 2018; plans for something better have been considered since 2021.
