The Association for the City of La Jolla asks petition signers to check their signatures are valid and is up against an April 1 deadline for verification.

Though no community has gotten as far as the Association for the City of La Jolla in a quest for secession from a larger city, ACLJ now faces a speed bump on its journey.

ACLJ’s petition, submitted as part of its January application to the San Diego Local Agency Formation Commission to investigate whether cityhood for La Jolla is feasible, is 1,072 signatures short.

ACLJ is now canvassing neighborhoods and hosting petition sites at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters on La Jolla Boulevard and Brick and Bell on Silverado Street daily from 8 am to noon to collect more signatures by Tuesday, April 1.

The 1,027 signatures ACLJ lacks were collected during the group’s 2024 petition drive and deemed invalid by the San Diego Registrar of Voters, due to those signers filing out information incorrectly or incompletely.

As part of its application to LAFCO, ACLJ needed the petition to show 25 percent of registered voters in La Jolla, or about 6,750 people, support the inquiry into La Jolla’s detachment from the city of San Diego.

To check if your petition entry is valid, call the Registrar of Voters at (858) 565-5800 or email rovmail@sdcounty.ca.gov with your name, date of birth, address and the message “I would like to check the status (valid or invalid) of my signature on the petition supporting a feasibility analysis for the City of La Jolla”.
