The engine boasts the latest technology in firefighting vehicles.
The region’s first electric fire engine has made its home at the San Diego Fire Department’s new Torrey Pines Fire Station, which opened with a ribbon cutting Oct. 17 on North Torrey Pines Road just southwest of the Genesee Avenue intersection.
The new fire station, also called Station 52, will serve UC San Diego, the Torrey Pines Mesa and University City.
The fire engine is called a Volterra, made by Pierce Manufacturing.
Station 52 “could not be just any ordinary fire station for both the city and the university,” said San Diego City Council President Pro Tem Joe LaCava, whose District 1 includes La Jolla. “We needed … a building that serves the community today and prepares us for the challenges of tomorrow.”
Following that, “we designed a new fire station and equipped it with vehicles that will meet our public safety needs effectively and sustainably,” he said.
“The Torrey Pines fire station furthers our city’s commitment to an all electric future [with] our deployment of the city’s first electric fire engine,” LaCava said.
The fire station also has the city’s first rapid electric vehicle charging station,” he said, which “will allow our firefighters to maintain the high standard of excellence while advancing the city’s fleet electrification goals.”
The electric fire engine “is one of the first in the entire country, and it’s right here in San Diego,” Mayor Todd Gloria said. “The world knows that we are serious about protecting our climate.”
