About 200 community members gathered with signs and chants to protest the current administration, receiving largely positive responses from drivers.
As the sun emerged, so did the protesters in La Jolla, with hundreds waving handmade signs and chanting June 14 as part of a nationwide protest against President Donald Trump.
The intersection at Pearl Street and Girard Avenue was flanked on all four corners as protesters held signs with sayings including “No Faux King Way,” “Americans Against Oligarchy” and “Democracy not Autocracy” and yelled statements like “The people united will never be defeated,” “Honk if you love democracy” and more.
The demonstrators garnered much support via hundreds of cars honking as they drove by.
“Finally, La Jolla has something to say,” La Jolla protester Melinda Merryweather said.
There were a handful of instances of opposition; two car passengers booed, one walked by and made angry facial expressions and another man on a bike held up a middle finger as he rode by.
After an hour at the intersection, the protesters marched north on Girard Avenue to Prospect and Jenner streets and Coast Boulevard, joining residents from Casa de Mañana in front of the retirement facility who marched as well.
The San Diego Police Department later released a statement commending protesters across the city for the peaceful demonstrations, including two demonstrations downtown that drew an estimated 60,000-plus participants.
As of Saturday afternoon, no arrests had been made, and there were no reports of property damage or injuries related to the protests citywide.
San Diego City Council President Joe LaCava, whose District 1 includes La Jolla, also supported the protests, posting on Instagram that the current administration “threatens our safety.”
