Into the weeds: Friends of Coast Walk gloves up for annual ‘party’

The April 5 weed-pulling event aims to beautify Coast Walk Trail, calling on volunteers to lend a hand (or two).

All hands on deck – and trail: The fourth annual “Weed (pulling) Party” will be held from 10 am to 1 pm Saturday, April 5, along Coast Walk Trail.

The event is hosted by nonprofit group Friends of Coast Walk Trail, which hopes to have 80 people attend to help pull several types of invasive plants that can crowd out native species and crowd the trail.

The historic Coast Walk Trail is a path measuring just over a half-mile, running along the bluffs in La Jolla from Goldfish Point and Coast Boulevard east to Coast Walk. It’s a popular trail among residents and visitors for its views and ease of access.

Last year’s weed-pulling party saw about 50 volunteers assisting the effort, pulling about five tons of weeds.

Friends of Coast Walk Trail founder Brenda Fake is hoping for more people this year, but acknowledged rain occurred earlier in the season last year, meaning weed growth isn’t as robust yet in 2025.

Fake is still looking for an event sponsor to cover the cost of removing the pulled weeds from the trail. Email befake@aol.com for more details.

To volunteer for the event, meet at The Cave Store, 1325 Coast Blvd, on April 5 to sign in and get pulling.
