A similar incident in 2019 led to a tree’s removal at the same location; Bird Rock leaders are worried about a repeat removal and want to save the tree.

Bird Rock Maintenance Assessment District manager Matt Mangano is asking for information regarding the most recent vandalism of a Canary Island pine.

The pine tree, located in the median between Colima and Forward streets and closest to 5535 La Jolla Blvd, appears to have been partially cut with a handsaw on at least two occasions. Damage was first reported Feb 13, with further vandalism noted Feb 15.

The tree is on city of San Diego property within the area tasked to Bird Rock MAD for maintenance and  landscaping.

Mangano filed a police report Feb 15, noting that not only has the vandalism caused damage to public property, but it is also “extremely dangerous for … traffic and pedestrians should the tree lose stability.”

Mangano also reported the tree damage is similar to a 2019 incident, in which saw marks at the same location resulted in the loss and removal of an adjacent pine tree.

The replacement costs for that tree exceed $30,000, Mangano said.

Mangano is unsure who is sawing at the tree but has received tips a nearby homeowner may be attempting to cut down the tree to create an unobstructed ocean view, although Mangano does not have any leads on a specific homeowner or address.

“I just want to stop [the vandalism] so we can save the tree,” he said. “It’s so offensive.”

San Diego Parks & Recreation Department staff are aware of the damage, city spokesperson Benny Cartwright said, along with the police report.
