A new partnership between a San Diego County supervisor and the San Diego City Council president brings bonfires back to the beach.

After last month’s draft budget revealed the city of San Diego would eliminate fire rings at city beaches and bays, including the three fire rings at La Jolla Shores, San Diego County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer has announced a new partnership that will reverse the cut.

Lawson-Remer and San Diego City Council President Joe LaCava, both of whom include La Jolla in their respective districts, announced June 5 an offer of grant funding from the county to keep San Diego’s fire rings, previously cut to help the city address a $258 million deficit.

The county’s grant will fully fund the fire rings – the only place where beach fires are legally allowed – through summer 2026, Lawson-Remer said in a June 6 newsletter.

Lawson-Remer and LaCava’s offices did not immediately respond to requests for further information and comment.

The grant will allow the city time to plan for the future, Lawson-Remer’s newsletter stated: “This is a stopgap, but it’s a meaningful one.”
