Fence near La Jolla bike path will remain, city says

A fence of dubious origin has been deemed permissible by the city of San Diego.

Complaints about the fence, installed near 6222 La Jolla Hermosa Ave. and blocking access to the La Jolla bike path, prompted the city to investigate whether the fence was constructed on private or public property.

City staff, who began the investigation in late April, discovered recently that La Jolla Hermosa Avenue between the cul-de-sac and Mesa Way is “private property per Record of Survey 2980,” according to city spokesperson Perette Godwin.

However, an 18-foot-wide public easement for utility access runs along the rear of the properties, Godwin added.

The San Diego Public Utilities Department later confirmed that no sewer or water facilities run through this easement, meaning “the existing easement currently serves no purpose for maintaining public sewer and water assets and PUD has no reason to request the fence’s removal,” she said.
