New experiences will open Oct. 4.

Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego in La Jolla is temporarily closed through Thursday, Oct. 3 for renovations.

The aquarium will reopen on Friday, Oct. 4 with new experiences including “Embodied Pacific: Ocean Unseen,” “Riveropolis” and the “Coral Classroom.”

The area formerly known as the “Hall of Fishes” will remain closed for several months as it transforms into “Living Seas,” the largest capital improvement since Birch Aquarium was built in 1992.

Hall of Fishes saw more than 12 million visitors in its three decades open.

Living Seas, opening summer 2025, is a “reimagined exhibition that invites guests to explore the wonders of the Pacific Ocean to inspire a love of nature, a sense of place and ocean optimism,” according to information from Birch.
