UC San Diego program recommended for $13.5m award

The StartBlue Ocean Enterprise Accelerator program seeks to turn research into action.

The US Department of Commerce and the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration announced Dec 9 that it is recommending awards totaling $54.3 million to four organizations, including StartBlue Ocean Enterprise Accelerator, a joint program of UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Rady School of Management, which would receive $13.5 million.

StartBlue’s mission to transition the latest ocean-based scientific research to actionable and commercially-viable solutions that support coastal resilience, maritime security and economic growth fits within the award’s aim to support small businesses and entrepreneurs as they bring to market solutions to benefit coastal resilience and a sustainable “blue economy.”

Funded by the Inflation Reduction Act, the $13.5 million award to StartBlue will enable the awardee, and three others nationally, to provide guidance, support and funding to spur the development of technologies and services that address a wide range of maritime issues.

“This program is the first of its kind at NOAA,” NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad said in a press release.

“We are bringing the public and private sectors together to create sustainable business models for technologies, products, and services that tackle climate resilience needs in oceans, coastal regions, and the Great Lakes.”
