Spoiler: Free scoops of artisanal ice creams – including vegan – ahead.
Whale-come to the pod: Killer Whale Creamery is now open at 7660 Fay Ave. Suite C in The Village.
A sister sweet spot to their first La Jolla venture at Blue Whale across the street, Mike Harrison and Dillon Berkabile’s newest venture is scooping up artisanal ice cream, made with 19 percent butterfat or completely vegan, coconut- and hemp milk-based flavors, along with homemade cones and milkshakes.
Business has been good since the Aug. 16 opening, Harrison said. “Every day there’s been more and more people.”
Some flavors are locally inspired, like Black’s Beachy cherry or the ube pancake with matcha latte swirl, based on a favorite Blue Whale menu item.
Some are vegan and served in collaboration with Frankie & Jo’s, the only certified organic and vegan ice creamery in the nation, Harrison said, adding Killer Whale is the only place to find Frankie & Jo’s in Southern California.
All scoops – whether in a cone (waffle or the signature black, gluten and dairy free Killer Whale cone) come with “a little garnish topping,” Harrison said, from the graham cracker crumbs and mini marshmallows on top of the s’mores on the beach flavor; the tart cherry powder and maraschino cherry atop the Black’s Beach cherry; the Harrison-made serrano sugar sprinkled on the churro-flavored ice cream; to the toasted coconut on the vegan strawberry coconut ice cream.

“It’s very visual,” he said, “like how our food is across the street [at Blue Whale]. Everything’s garnished and elevated.”
Other toppings are also available to add on.
Killer Whale also sells pints to go and branded merchandise.
Not sure you want to dive right in yet? Your chance to try a scoop is coming, with a “free scoop” day to be announced soon on Killer Whale’s Instagram (@killerwhalecreamery).
Harrison also has coupons for a free scoop with purchase at Blue Whale.
