Girard Avenue will remain closed on Sundays through 2024 from Genter Street along the length of La Jolla Elementary School for the operation of the La Jolla Open Aire farmers market.
The farmers market – which now draws about 150 vendors – has operated for 25 years on the school’s campus, as a fundraiser to support classrooms and other programs at the school.
The market closed down Girard beginning in summer, when the school’s ongoing whole-site modernization project – which began in 2021 and is expected to be completed this fall – took over the space normally used by the market.
The La Jolla Traffic & Transportation Board unanimously approved the request to extend the closure of Girard through this year at its Dec 19 meeting.
Currently, the farmers market operates from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the street and Julie MacDonald, La Jolla Open Aire Market manager, has received positive feedback from community members about the temporary relocation, according to the T&T minutes.
