Walter Munk Day: Honoring the ‘father of surf forecasting’

The annual La Jolla Shores event brought together educators, legislators and others for marine activity and celebration.

Under bright sun and with more exhibitors than ever, the fifth annual Walter Munk Day: Celebrate Our Oceans event brought crowds to La Jolla Shores Oct 4.

Hosted by the Walter Munk Foundation for the Oceans, the day featured more than 60 booths with interactive, ocean-related and conservation activities; a Kumeyaay tule boat building demonstration and launch; remarks by city and state officials; music performances; and a keynote address by meteorologist Shawn Styles.

The event honors Munk, a renowned oceanographer whose work as a geophysicist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego led to groundbreaking observations of waves, ocean temperature, tidal energy and more.

This iteration of Walter Munk Day focused on Munk as the “Father of Surf Forecasting,” said Mary Coakley Munk, Munk’s widow and the founder of the Walter Munk Foundation; Munk’s research led to the development of modern surf prediction.

Emotional at the growth of the event since its first year, Coakley Munk commended La Jolla’s support of Walter Munk Day and the team’s efforts.
