Ten La Jolla sites on this weekend’s architecture tour

The 92037 buildings and spaces on San Diego Architecture’s free Oh! San Diego tour cover a variety of time periods and designs.

Ten La Jolla and UC San Diego sites are featured on the annual San Diego Architecture’s Oh! San Diego tour happening this weekend in 10 local neighborhoods.

The La Jolla sites, available select hours from 10 am to 4 pm Sunday, March 9 are part of a pantheon of more than 70 architectural gems in San Diego, with guided and self-guided events beginning Saturday, March 8 to reveal how these spaces contribute to the city.

Below are the ten sites in The Village, The Shores and UCSD:

  • The Bishop’s School and its St. Mary’s Chapel on La Jolla Boulevard, notable for their respective 1909 and 1916 architecture.
  • Fire Station No. 52 on N Torrey Pines Road, which opened last year with the city of San Diego’s first all-electric fire apparatus and a rapid electric vehicle charging station.
  • Grande Colonial Hotel & NINE-TEN Restaurant on Prospect Street, included for being La Jolla’s oldest original hotel, designed by Richard Requa in 1913.
  • La Jolla Historical Society on Prospect Street, included for its three historic buildings including the 1904 Wisteria Cottage, 1909 cottage for offices and a 1926 carriage house for archival storage.
  • Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego on Prospect Street, included as the original 1916 home of Ellen Browning Scripps before becoming the museum and expanding over the decades.
  • La Jolla/Riford Library on Draper Avenue, included for history and expansions featuring architectural elements like a skylight-covered atrium and a two-story stained-glass window.
  • La Jolla Shores Lifeguard Station on Camino Del Oro at The Shores, for its 2014 Orchid Award-winning use of materials on perpendicular planes to maximize visibility and functionality.
  • La Jolla Woman’s Club on Draper Avenue, for its typology and longevity of the 1914 building. The club continues to actively meet as it has for more than a century.
  • Sea + Stone La Jolla Village Apartments on Torrey Pines Road is a newcomer to The Village, included for its modern, coastal-inspired residential design.
  • UC San Diego Theatre District Living & Learning Neighborhood on Theatre District Drive, a newer construction of contemporary campus design on a 10-acre site.

Eight other UCSD sites are included in the weekend tours. Visits are free; check the website for specific tour times to plan your day. A map of the La Jolla sites will be available at the La Jolla Historical Society; a map of the UCSD sites will be available at the Epstein Amphitheater on Innovation Lane.
