Synchronized swimming: Hundreds take part in annual Pier to Cove Swim

The La Jolla Cove Swim Club event drew hundreds of swimmers into the water at Scripps Pier to make the 1.5-mile journey to La Jolla Cove.

Hundreds of swimmers kept their heads (mostly) above water as they raced from Scripps Pier at La Jolla Shores to La Jolla Cove, during La Jolla Cove Swim Club’s annual Pier to Cove Swim, a 1.5-mile swim that takes the average swimmer about 45 minutes.

A large crowd of spectators turned out to The Cove to cheer on the swimmers as they emerged from the water and ran towards the finish line.

Several swimmers expressed joy at completion, remarking on the sharks and sea lions that swam along.

San Diego lifeguards floated on boards along the route, maintaining safety.

This year’s race was “really fun,” La Jolla resident and event participant Hanna Bourne said.

Bourne has been swimming in The Cove since childhood, she said. “It was great to see everyone out here.”

The Pier to Cove Swim is a great but “not an easy event,” said spectator and La Jollan Bob Evans. “It takes someone who’s comfortable and experienced.”
