Secret admirers: The ins and outs of the 26th annual Secret Garden Tour

Event photos by Provisions Media

Not even the pervasive May Gray prevented the seven gardens from shining, giving patrons a peek at some of the best La Jolla landscaping.

From labyrinths and lush sanctuaries to lap pools, the 26th annual La Jolla Historical Society Secret Garden Tour revealed some of the best-kept secrets in the community May 17, including a rare peek at a rare estate.

This year’s tour featured seven gardens throughout La Jolla, plus a wine reception and boutique at the La Jolla Historical Society.

The first six gardens, located in The Village, the Muirlands and La Jolla Alta neighborhoods, offered a variety of landscaping styles, from wildflower plantings and traditional rose gardens to vineyards, an elaborate labyrinth and more.

Each of the gardens also featured artists painting, musicians and local designers.

Some were perched atop hills with expansive ocean views that complemented the beauty of the home gardening skills, another was nestled above a golf course hugging a 1920s home while yet another boasted a modern aesthetic with classic components.

The pinnacle of the tour was the historic “Harold Muir” estate, named for the founder of the Muirlands neighborhood with extensive gardens designed by renowned, early San Diegan Kate Sessions.

This seventh tour garden, reserved for Platinum ticket holders, spreads over nearly three acres and is an example not only of well-manicured beauty but also of preservation, with a meadow of native plants under a magnolia tree, a 30-year-old oak tree craned into space over a butterfly garden and more.
