The second iteration of the tour opened the doors of seven local homes.

Following last year’s successful blueprint, the La Jolla Modernism Home Tour led hundreds of architecture, design and history fans to build on their appreciation of local living Oct. 5.

The tour, which has become the foundation for La Jolla Historical Society’s Architecture Week (formerly called Landmark Week), featured a curated selection of six homes for the self-guided tour and a seventh on the Platinum Tour, which was guided by bus rides and included lunch.

The Modernism Home Tour is a fundraiser for the Historical Society; “all the proceeds go back into our free exhibitions and our public programs and education offerings,” said Executive Director Lauren Lockhart.

The tour is also “an opportunity for folks to see the interiors of these spectacular, rare and beautifully preserved modern homes” throughout La Jolla, she said, adding no home was repeated from last year’s tour.

The seven homes shown this year were built from 1940 to 1987 and are in five different local neighborhoods.

The houses featured the architectural designs of J. Herbert Brownell, Wallace Cunningham, Russell Forester, Yum Kee Fu, Kendrick Bangs Kellogg, Roger W. Matthews, Sim Bruce Richards and Ruocco & Delawie.

Those on the tour wandered the interiors and exteriors of the homes, with volunteers pointing out remarkable renovations or other noteworthy aspects, with the homes’ design choices, art pieces and more lending color and vibrancy to an otherwise foggy day.
