La Jolla Historical Society seeks 2026 Jewel Awards nominations

The deadline to submit nominations for recently rehabilitated or restored structures in La Jolla is Saturday, Aug 1.

La Jolla Historical Society is now seeking nominations for the 2026 Jewel Awards. Anyone may submit nominations for recently rehabilitated or restored structures that preserve the rich character and charm of La Jolla.

The awards are for three typical categories, plus a fourth, new category: The Jewel Award for Rehabilitation recognizes owners who repair, alter and make additions to a property, adapting it to contemporary use while preserving the historic, cultural or architectural character; The Jewel Award for Restoration recognizes owners whose updates to a property include preserving and returning it to its original architectural form and character, often reflecting a particular time in La Jolla’s history; and the Jewel Award for Preservation acknowledges community volunteers who ensure the legacy of iconic Village landmarks.

New this year, the Legacy Business Jewel Award, to honor businesses that contribute to La Jolla’s village identity and sense of place, defining La Jolla through their longevity, stewardship and preservation of character-defining storefronts, signage, traditions or locations.

The Jewel Awards are sponsored by the Historical Society’s Landmark Group, a collective of owners of historically designated homes in La Jolla dedicated to ensuring the enjoyment of La Jolla’s history and architecture for future generations.

Nomination forms and past winners can be found at lajollahistory.org/jewel-award. The deadline for submissions is Saturday, Aug 1.

Winners will be announced in October. Email Seonaid McArthur, chair of the Landmark Steering Committee, at lajollalandmarkgroup@gmail.com, Meredith Baratz at mybaratz@icloud.com or Susan Comden at scomden@aol.com for more information.
