The Barragan family’s next generation will serve tacos, brunch and more from their new La Jolla restaurant.

Bringing its family-run style of Mexican restaurants to La Jolla, Tacos & Jarros from the Cotijas/Cazadores family is preparing to open in late August at 1109 Wall St.

Tacos & Jarros, the next generation from the Barragan family, will serve tacos, tapas, tap beer and wine, following a Mexican tradition of serving “jarritos,” drinks made in clay jugs (“jarros”).

In addition, Tacos & Jarros, after learning from community members its site had been home to two breakfast spots previously (Comedor Nishi and Coffee Cup), will offer coffee and breakfast items like traditional Mexican chilaquiles and a more American-style French toast – with a Tacos & Jarros spin.

The menus are still in curation but will follow the Tacos & Jarros vision to provide The Village with a “casual yet still refined” selection of dishes, said Ariana Barragan, daughter of restaurant owner Rafael Barragan.

Rafael and his wife, Maria Barragan, come from a long line of Mexican restaurant families: Maria’s father founded Cotijas Cocina in Point Loma in 1974.

The family business quickly branched out into several outposts run by family members, including Cazadores Mexican Grill in Santee.

The family now expands into La Jolla with Tacos & Jarros, which Ariana will operate with her siblings, she said.

With this new concept, the family is aiming for a more elevated, fast lunch and dinner spot for office workers, visitors and residents looking for an affordable meal in a walk-up order environment, Ariana said.

“We hope that it’s something that everyone can enjoy in La Jolla,” she added, noting Tacos & Jarros will, like its predecessors, remain “family-oriented” and welcoming.

The Barragan family has often noticed “what a great community is in La Jolla,” Ariana said, “and we’re just grateful for the opportunity to become a part of it.”
