The Pavilions store at 7544 Girard Ave. may close if a merger of two grocery titans goes through.
Kroger and Albertsons, two of the largest grocery companies, released a list July 10 of 579 stores to be sold off under their proposed merger, as reported by CBS 8. The La Jolla location is one of 11 San Diego area stores included.
Kroger executives have informed employees at all the affected locations that the stores would be turned over to C&S Wholesale Grocers if the merger goes through, with jobs intact at C&S.
The Federal Trade Commission is challenging the proposed $24.6 billion merger, however, saying it would lead to higher grocery prices and negatively affect workers.
The United Food and Commercial Workers union, which represents grocery workers, continues to oppose the merger.
The La Jolla store was converted from a Vons to the upscale Pavilions in fall 2022.
