Japhet’s Painting Company aims to lead with ‘honest business’

Japhet's Painting Company

The La Jolla-based company offers a multitude of services and strives to operate with integrity and expertise.

Mixing initiative with knowledgeable artistry, Japhet’s Painting Company provides quality work that surpasses building beautification.

“I go above and beyond,” said owner Japhet Perez.

Japhet’s Painting Company offers exterior and interior painting services for residential and commercial buildings, working all over San Diego County.

Perez also takes on stucco and drywall projects and works with his numerous contacts on electrical and plumbing needs, cabinetry, granite work and more, offering clients a one-stop resource.

Garnering five-star reviews and an abundance of repeat customers, Perez owes his early success to his combining self-taught business acumen with highly-skilled craftsmanship.

Perez, a Columbia University graduate with a job in the UC San Diego finance department and a background in sociology, analytics and software engineering, taught himself the ins and outs of running his own business while watching his father become a “master painter.”

“My dad’s been painting for three decades,” Perez said, noting his father works for Japhet’s Painting Company now. “After 30 years, you become a master at your craft.”

“Construction is anything but unskilled labor,” Perez said. “We are artisans that have honed our craft for decades,” resulting in efficiency.

“The homes and buildings that we [beautify] with our painting skills are our masterpieces,” he said. “Our skills cannot be automated [nor] be replaced by AI.”

That high-quality work, along with the company’s quick, responsive communication and willingness to work with customers’ needs is a hallmark of Perez’s business model.

“If I give you a good price and good quality work, you’ll refer me,” Perez said. “Let’s see what your budget is, and we’ll make it work.”

Additionally, “we offer honest business,” he said, ensuring he prices his work to avoid what he calls the “La Jolla tax,” an upcharge based on assumptions of La Jolla incomes.

A La Jolla resident himself, Perez has maintained an active role in the community, serving as a board member for the La Jolla Village Merchants Association (and its immediate past president), along with contracting with nonprofit Enhance La Jolla to restore benches in The Village and replace stucco at the Athenaeum.

“I live here, I walk these streets,” Perez said. “I want it to look nice.”

Perez is excited his company is taking off as the industry is transitioning to more digital and social tools and away from the existing Rolodexes of business cards.

With his modern business skills and his reliance on well-honed talent, Japhet’s Painting Company is able to “get it fast and get it right,” he said, adding he’s also working on his general contractor’s license.
