“The Outsiders,” a Broadway musical that originated at La Jolla Playhouse during the 2022-2023 season, took home four Tony Awards June 16, including best new musical.
The show, an adaptation of the classic young adult novel by S.E. Hinton about rival gangs in 1960s Oklahoma, is a “deeply moving and visceral new piece [that] took its first steps here at La Jolla Playhouse,” said Playhouse Rich Family Artistic Director Christopher Ashley in a statement.
“What an absolute thrill,” Ashley said of the awards. “We send our heartfelt congratulations to Tony-winning director Danya Taymor, along with the entire cast and creative team.”

La Jolla Playhouse is “incredibly proud to see [‘The Outsiders’] receive such wonderful recognition on Broadway.”
The Playhouse has had 36 productions move to Broadway (including “Come From Away,” “Jersey Boys” and “The Outsiders,” which had 12 Tony nominations and four wins; and “Lempicka,” which had three nominations), with 42 cumulative Tony Awards for those 36 shows.
