MCASD adds to ‘New on View’ with ‘Memories of an American Past’

The themed presentation, curated by MCASD Executive Director Kathryn Kanjo, features works by Vito Acconci and Gary Simmons.

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego’s “New on View” series, meant to showcase pieces from the museum’s permanent collection in a themed approach curated by MCASD David C. Copley Executive Director and Chief Executive Kathryn Kanjo, now highlights two notable installations by Vito Acconci and Gary Simmons.

“New on View: Memories of an American Past,” showing in the Carolyn and Jack M Farris Gallery, makes allusions to labor, play, war and peace and also features works by Amy Adler, Terry Allen, Sadie Barnette, Rafael Canogar, Allan Sekula, and William E Jones.

Acconci’s “Instant House” (1980) is displayed at MCASD for the first time since its recent presentation at The Broad in Los Angeles. Acconci’s interactive sculpture, assembled from multiple cloth flags, combines youthful memories, playhouses and park swings into an adult meditation on global politics.

Simmons’ massive blackboard drawing, “Gazebo,” hangs nearby, isolated and nearly erased from view, following Simmons’ creation through erasure to address dynamics of race and class.
