The new exhibit under construction will replace the former “Hall of Fishes.”
Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego in La Jolla is one-third of the way through a project to transform the former “Hall of Fishes” exhibit into “Living Seas.”
Living Seas is the largest capital improvement since Birch Aquarium was built in 1992 and is set to open summer 2025 with extensive improvements and upgrades to a large portion of the aquarium, including new or refreshed – and larger – habitats for more than 4,000 of Birch Aquarium’s animals.

Most of those animals have been relocated temporarily behind the scenes or to other parts of the aquarium, a “massive, logistical undertaking,” according to Birch.
Moving the animals took about six weeks, following thorough planning for animal health, compatibility, sensitivity and more.
