Windansea Beach is the quintessential Southern California surf break. Located just south of The Village, this stretch of coastline is famous for its striking sandstone rock formations, powerful crashing waves and the iconic, palm-frond-covered surf shack that has stood on the beach since 1946.

Unlike the gentle, rolling waves of La Jolla Shores, Windansea is defined by its dramatic, heavy surf that breaks directly onto underwater reefs. It has been a proving ground for legendary surfers for decades and remains a central hub of local surf culture.

While it is a paradise for experienced wave riders and photographers, Windansea is equally famous for what it is not. It is not a beginner-friendly swimming beach.; the currents here are notoriously strong and unpredictable. For those staying dry, however, the smooth sandstone slabs offer the perfect natural grandstand for watching the local talent and capturing a breathtaking La Jolla sunset.

• The Shack: The historic shack provides shade, is recognized as an official historical landmark and is one of the most photographed structures in San Diego.
• The vibe: Authentic, local and incredibly scenic. You’ll be among a mix of dedicated surfers, neighborhood residents walking their dogs and photographers.

Advanced surfers, sunset chasers, photographers and couples looking for a romantic spot to watch the waves.

Local’s Tip:
If you’re not an experienced ocean swimmer or surfer, admire the water from the sand. The shore break here is heavy and the rip currents are invisible but powerful. For a relaxed family swim, head a few miles north to La Jolla Shores Beach instead.”

• Facilities: Windansea is a natural beach. There are no public restrooms, showers or water fountains.
