In late October, the area transforms for the annual BirdStock Music Festival, bringing artisan vendors, live music stages and family activities to La Jolla Boulevard.

For ocean lovers, the shoreline is rugged and natural. The exposed reefs create powerful, complex surf breaks suited strictly for advanced wave riders. During autumn low tides, the coastal sandstone reveals intricate tide pools filled with sea anemones, crabs and small fish.

• Calumet Park: A narrow, grassy neighborhood park resting atop the coastal bluffs, this is one of the most serene, crowd-free places to watch a La Jolla sunset.
• The offshore landmark: The historic rock formation sits just off the coast near the foot of Bird Rock Avenue, acting as a natural sanctuary for native coastal birds.
• Boutiques and cafes: La Jolla Boulevard features independent coffee roasters, surf boutiques  and neighborhood dining.

• Beach access: Most of the shoreline consists of rocky cliffs and cobblestone rather than wide, sandy beaches.
• Surfing safety: The reef breaks here are shallow, rocky and unpredictable and there are no lifeguards present. Only experienced surfers should paddle out.
