Miriam Pawel: California Dreams with Maria Anguiano

Warwick’s presents Miriam Pawel as she discusses and signs her new book, “California Dreams: The Making and Remaking of the University of California,” in conversation with Maria Anguiano.

Miriam Pawel is an award-winning reporter and editor who spent twenty-five years working for Newsday and the Los Angeles Times. She is the author of The Browns of California: The Family Dynasty that Transformed a State and Shaped a Nation, which was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and a California Book Award Gold Medal and The Crusades of Cesar Chavez, a National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist and the Winner of the California Book Award. Pawel was recently an Alicia Patterson Foundation Fellow and a John Jacobs Fellow at the Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies.

“California Dreams” is a history of one of the world’s elite public universities. Drawing on extensive archival sources, memoirs and interviews, Pawel recounts the birth, rise and ongoing transformations of the ten campuses, six health centers, three national laboratories and hundreds of programs and research centers that comprise the University of California, weaving together the linked history of the school and state in all its drama, significance and humanity. The result is a magisterial narrative of both a remarkable public institution of higher education and also California itself.

The event is free; reserved seating is available with advance book purchase here.
