California Coastal Cleanup Day

I Love A Clean San Diego leads the 42nd Annual Coastal Cleanup Day across San Diego County, part of the international cleanup organized by the Ocean Conservancy and the California Coastal Commission.

In La Jolla, volunteers can sign up at Children’s Pool, Ellen Browning Scripps Park, the Fay Avenue Extension Bike Path, La Jolla Cove or Windansea Beach.

At check-in, a site captain leads a brief orientation and safety talk before volunteers head out to collect litter, then oversees sorting and disposal once the cleanup wraps. Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and closed-toed shoes and bring sun protection and a water bottle; site captains supply trash bags and disposable gloves. All volunteers must sign a release-of-liability waiver at check-in, with a parent or guardian required to sign for anyone under 18.

Cleanup teams are encouraged to track what they collect using the Clean Swell app, with data feeding into the world’s largest database on marine debris.

The event runs rain or shine, so guests should pack rain boots, a raincoat and a towel if wet weather is in the forecast.
