The Jeffrey B Graham Perspectives on Ocean Science Lecture Series returns to Birch Aquarium at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography this September, celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation.
The series will explore the history of the center from the founding to today, highlight current research and look toward a vision for the future with optimism for a thriving ocean.
The series kicks off Sept 14 with “Science and Solutions for Our Ocean Planet” with Nancy Knowlton, member of the National Academy of Sciences, former Sant Chair for Marine Science at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and the founder and first director of CMBC.
Join Knowlton as she shares CMBC’s journey from an embryonic idea to a vibrant interdisciplinary research and education center that has reshaped the culture of ocean science around the world by fostering awe-inspiring discoveries and providing solutions to the challenges of today and tomorrow.

Monday, Oct 12: “Current Research, Future Impact: Student Perspectives of CMBC”
Hear from the students of CMBC as they discuss their research, their perspectives and how the Center has impacted their lives, their work and their future success.
Monday, Nov 9: “Vision for A Thriving Ocean”
Stuart Sandin, current director of CMBC, will discuss the role of the center in today’s research landscape and the hope for a thriving ocean.
Tickets are free for Birch Aquarium members and $12 for the general public. Seating is limited and advanced reservations are required for all guests, including members. Registration is now open for the September lecture and will soon be added for the others.
