Chill out: Ice Cream in La Jolla

Whether your dessert vibe is ice cream, gelato or frozen yogurt, we can all agree that indulging in a cold treat is the cherry on top of a perfect La Jolla day.

Check out our guide to our top five La Jolla ice cream spots below:

1. Bobboi Natural Gelato

We don’t play “flavorites,” but a stop at Bobboi Natural Gelato at 8008 Girard Ave. never disappoints. And if gelato is wrong for a “best ice cream” in La Jolla list, we don’t want to be right.

The gelato here is varied, innovated from locally-sourced, fresh and organic ingredients made daily from scratch. Bobboi also features a wide array of vegan and dairy-free options, and every recipe on the menu board is flavorful and satisfying.

Don’t let the long lines deter you; with samples to try while you mull over your choices and a terrific view of Scripps Park, Bobboi is worth the wait while on a visit to The Cove.

2. Froglanders Crepes & Yogurt

At the south end of The Village, wander into Froglanders Crepes & Yogurt at 915 Pearl St., where you can satisfy your sweet and savory cravings in one place.

Founded in 1986, Froglanders is family-owned and offers many choices for frozen yogurt with toppings galore. Try their original tart flavor, experiment with their salted caramel pretzel froyo or walk away with one of their refreshing yogurt shakes.

The menu also features fresh smoothie and boba drinks, along with crepes both savory and sweet with vegan and gluten-free options, like the “Naughty Banana” with banana, caramel, walnuts or the “Greek” with chicken, pesto, cheddar and tomato.

3. Killer Whale Creamery

Holding waffle cone with ice cream at the kitchen with food ingredients and ice cream maker machine on the backgroundHow did an ice cream shop that isn’t officially open yet land on our list of La Jolla ice cream shops? Trust us, we’ve done the research. Killer Whale Creamery at 7660 Fay Ave., Suite C is opening imminently, and we’ve been lucky enough to have a couple taste tests along the way.

Killer Whale, brought to you by the owners of all-day cafe Blue Whale, will feature artisanal ice cream, made with 19 percent butterfat and offering vegan, coconut-based and hemp milk-based flavors, along with homemade cones and milkshakes.

Killer Whale plans to source fresh, local ingredients and focus on tantalizing, quality flavors, some named for our La Jolla favorites like the “Blacks Beach Cherry.”

4. Scoops La Jolla – Shores location

You can’t truly decide who’s got the best ice cream in La Jolla without stopping at Scoops La Jolla, located a block from The Shores at 2179 Avenida De La Playa.

Since 2018, the family-owned Scoops has been delighting those in the La Jolla Shores community with handcrafted ice cream, partnering with Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream for diverse flavors crafted by local and global artisans and farmers.

Scoops La Jolla often has a line out the door, some on their way home after a day at the beach and others stopping in while wandering the neighborhood. All are there for the quality and freshness of the ice cream, with classic varieties and vegan options.

And with from-scratch crepes and coffee drinks, there’s something for every palate at Scoops La Jolla.

5. Scoops La Jolla – Village location

We’ll get straight to the pint: with two La Jolla ice cream shops, Scoops deserved two spots on our list. The second shop at 1025 Prospect St. #130 opened recently, carrying the same ice cream, crepes and beverages that made the first location popular.

The Village shop, however, is more than just a La Jolla ice cream stop: The second Scoops has an extended variety of items such as acai bowls, shakes, smoothies and local pastries.

With ice cream in La Jolla as delicious as these choices, we invite you to try them all and tell us what your favorites are.
